What do you think are the main things that PS has that elements cant do one way or another??
I have been really happy with PSE...but am wondering if I spent the money on PS, what more am I getting (that I would undertand and acutally use??)

Hi, I'll keep revising my list.   But I can give you some ideas...

1.   You can not create text paths in PSE, but you can use the ones that have been created in PS.
2.   You can not create ACTIONS in PSE, but you can use ones that have been specifically made for PSE in PS.
3.   I'll add more! :)

You can download a free trial for PS and try it out. I did that after knowing my way around PSE, and felt like it was just too overwhelming and unnecessary for what I want to do. I have no interest in designing and selling my own digital kits. If you think you'd like to try that sometime than you need Photoshop CS2

Quote
Some of the features in Photoshop CS2 that are not included in Photoshop Elements 5 are:

    * CMYK and LAB color modes
    * More tools and features that work with high-bit (16-bit and 32-bit) images
    * Combine multiple exposures to create high dynamic range (HDR) images
    * Channels Palette
    * Recording custom Actions (for batch processing)
    * Adjustments: Color Balance, Match Color
    * Layer Masks, Layer Comps, and Quick Mask mode
    * Smart Objects, Smart Guides
    * Lens Blur Filter
    * Vanishing Point Tool
    * Pen tool and paths palette
    * Some adjustment layers (curves, color balance, selective color, channel mixer)
    * Editing History Log
    * Text on a path, advanced text formatting
    * Advanced Layer Style manipulation
    * Advanced Color Management
    * Advanced Web features and ImageReady (rollovers, slicing)
    * Customizable tool presets, keyboard shortcuts, and menus
    * In the features and tools that are shared, the Photoshop version usually offers more advanced options for fine tuning and control.

Although these features are not natively supported in Photoshop Elements, some of them can be simulated through other tools in Elements (layer masks and quick mask, for example), and some are actually there, but hidden and only accessible through actions created in the full version of Photoshop.

Photoshop Elements also offers some features that are not available in Photoshop such as the cookie cutter tool, drop in frames, backgrounds, and artwork, an automatic red eye removal, Quick Fix mode, and the Photo Organizer. The Photo Organizer (only in the Windows version of Photoshop Elements 3 and up) lets you organize your photos with tags, then search and share them. The Organizer also offers several types of creations for sharing your photos in slide shows, video CDs, cards, email, calendars, Web galleries, and photo books.

Is it an online workshop or IRL? I bet there will be plenty of help for any questions. Still, let us know how it goes.

Hi Karen,
I teach Photoshop classes locally and I will admit that the first time my students start in it they usually feel a bit overwhelmed but if you have a good teacher that understands the magnitude of the program he/she will answer your questions and help you work through the "wow" of it all.

It can be a great program and if you can have training on it that will make you sucessful quicker than going at it on your own.

As Julie Ann has said though, if you don't plan to do a lot of designing, etc you may LIKE elements better :) if you don't have either I'd recommend downloading both and trying them out.

If you have questions feel free to ask! :) HTH!

I do have PSE and am very happy with it.  I do volunteer work at the local Telecentre and this course is training for the Telecentre.

It's always fun to learn something new - especially with Photoshop Elements so I can imagine if you get the hang of it - you'll be fabulous with PS as well.

You all know those "....for dummies" books?  Is there one for PSE?  I bought the program a few months ago and CANNOT figure it out.  I am too impatient, I guess.  I can go to my studio, not have a CLUE what I want to make and have the thing finished before I can even figure ANYTHING out on PSE.....learner's block, or some such nonsense, I guess...... :'( ::) 8)

There certainly is - which version do you have? You'll want to get the one that corresponds to your version.

Don't feel bad Sherry LOL I get SO impatient when I'm learning new things. I just want it to ALL make sense RIGHT NOW HAHAH! Those "for dummies" books are fantastic. Hope you can find one that fits your fancy. The Scrappers Guide (Linda Sattgast) has a great resource as well. :) www.scrappersguide.com

I currently have PSE4...is it worth paying the $99 to upgrade to PSE5? What are the benefits?
I only bought this software last year (just before the upgrade was released) and am just learning to use it.
Thanks
Lorraine

You can try PSE 5.0 at adobe.com as a free trial. I did so after I had PSE 4.0 for a while. I personally liked PSE 4.0 and the new features weren't enough for me to upgrade. I read some people had a few glitches with 5.0 - not sure if they are resolved or not.

I have pse3 and pse4....but I still just use pse3 coz 4 is HEAPS slower on my computer. Now why is that??! ???

I'm not sure. I noticed the same thing when I tried PSE 5.0 - that it seemed slower than 4.0. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that you have both programs taxing your computer resources???? Maybe if there was only one of the programs on your computer and not both it would work at normal speed?

It would be a great question to ask at the adobe.com PSE forums.

Hi.  I have an iMac, the 07 model.  Currently I have 0.3 PSE and was told 5 isn't that great.  PSE 6 just came out for windows pc's and it should come out early 08 for iMacs.  Is this going to be a good upgrade for an iMac?  You know with auto red eye removal, better pic adjusting, etc?  I just started on Renee Pearson's Digital designs for scrapbooking and after the 1st chapter, I was already
able to do more than the chapter showed....I now do paper, digi & hybrid scrapping and I'd like to keep up with the upgrades if their worth the $$$.. KWIM  TIA

Great question Patti! I'll let the other editor's know about PSE 6.0 and see if we can get a copy to review for the magazine. So hang on in the meantime. I took RP's class too and she is a fantastic person, a very sweet & genuine person in real life too!

You will be able to  download a trial version of PSE 6.0 before you buy it. And the nice thing about Adobe is that the trial versions are fully functionable!

where is the cookie cutter tool on Photoshop Elements.  I don't know the program, but my husband has it on his computer so I was trying one of the tutorials on your site.  Everything went great until I couldn't for the life of me locate the "cookie cutter" tool.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Marsha,
Thanks for your question.  Becoming familiar with all of the tools can be frustrating at first.
Make sure that your tool bar is on.  To do this go to Window (at the top of your screen)and click on tools.
The cookie cutter tool is a yellow star shape.  You can also select it by typing Shift> Q
