The Printing Center / Printing FAQ / Re: Where to print 12"x12" digital scrapbook pages

Epson just launched (beginning of this month) their R1900 which is an upgrade to the R1800 and I have to say it has amazing ink difference (quality in prints and colors) I am impressed with it. Also, the price is the same as the R1800 was and the ink prices about the same I think. (full price ~ $550) I find that I pay, roughly, per print (12 x 12 size that is) $3.85. This is an estimate based on me running a variety of papers and prints through my printer until the ink was out. I combine the price of the paper with the cost of a set of ink and divided it by the # of prints I made and this is about what I got for pricing. The B9180 from HP is about $650 full price and I think the price per page is about $4.00 Inks last longer because they are larger than the other printers but they also cost more to replace. When you average it all out it runs about the same as the other printers do you just don't have to repurchase ink as often. There are 2 reviews on the R1800 and B9180 printers (one that is in our last issue Vol 1 issue 4 and the next is coming out in Vol 2 Issue 1) We'll have a review on the R1900 soon too. When it comes down to purchasing a printer v.s. using a local print lab I think that you have to figure out exactly what you'll end up doing w/ your printer. If you're hybrid scrapbooking I think that overall having your own printer is much more efficent and allows for more print options. (Like transparencies, vellum, etc.) But if you are simply going to print backgrounds or digital pages to embellish on top then you could get away with using a local print shop. Unless the print shops do 12x12's for $4 or less then you should look into a personal printer or the print shops online that offer better pricing. Amy knows a lot about printing so if you have time you should take her up on additional information. I hope that helps

Hello! If you are a member I definitely recommend Costco if you have one. Costco offers 12x18, 12x12, 11x14, 8x12, 8x10 and 8x8 prints (*and smaller too) at a reasonable price. 12x18's & 12x12's are $2.99 (USD), the 11x14's are $1.99 and the 8x12's, 8x10's & 8x8's are $1.49. I used Costco almost solely for my printing before I got my Epson R1800. I like their 12x18 and 8x12's because I would use the extra space for additional pages (for example I could print 1 - 12x12 and 2 6x6's on a 12x18 for just $3- ! Great prices. They do also have a variety of other sizes that can be ordered online and some come directly to your door. Sams club also does larger prints but I haven't used them much. You could check with your local one to see. Walmart also does enlargements and their prices are comparible. I don't know what you have in your area but those would be the places I recommend that are local. ONLINE I would recommend you check into www.polkadotpotato.com and www.goodlifephoto.com. both have great prices.

Hi Lisa,
I can relate to not wanting to purchase software without seeing how it actually works. Unfortunately I don't have a code I can share or trade. But if you email they company they may have a way around it.
I actually LOVE the program. It is extremely easy to use and versitile.
What features are you hoping to learn more about perhaps I can help you make an educated decision from my experiences with the program?

Scrapbooking / MISC - NOT SCRAPBOOK RELATED / Re: Christmas Spirits

I have all my decore boxes out now. I use to wait but Christmas is my favorite holiday. Last year I spent 10 days in Japan at the start of December and so I didn't get to enjoy the decorations as much. I use to wait until after the Turkey's been downed on T-day before starting but this year we're doing T-day on Friday so the kids have asked me to start now and I'm quite willing to do it!
We always leave our tree up, decorated, until December 30th (my birthday) because when I was a little girlie my sister was born on December 20th and I didn't think it was fair that she had a tree for her birthday but I didn't have one for mine. LOL. So from the age of 8 on we've always left it up and I've carried that tradition on with my own family. Then we take the decorations off (leave the lights though) and it stays up until January 6th... the end of the 12 days of Christmas and Wise Mans day. Jan 7th it all gets put away.

Oh Maggie I completely FEEL YOUR PAIN! LOL I miss the seasons. I'm a seasons person. I like the change in weather, I like the change in hues. I literally hunt out trees out here as they change color LOL but it just isn't as brilliant as living in an area with a reason for seasons (lol the desert just doesn't get it!) I have some beautiful pictures from the Autumn in Japan and every year, when I go back I usually get the tail end of it. I'm hoping for some Autumn hues again this year. If i get any good snaps I'll share!

The Printing Center / Printing FAQ / Re: Printer Recommendations
|
on: November 07, 2007, 02:14:19 PM

I just did a printer overview in Issue 4 on both the Epson R1800 and HP B9180 and there is a second portion to the article coming out in Vol 2 Issue 1, first part of next year. (the latter article is all about how these printers handle in the hands of a scrapbooker and how their prints hold up to our torture! heh) I've been using (and have) both these printers. I like the HP for my photos. I use it more frequently for pure pictures but the Epson is all around designed more for the scrapbooker. I like them both. It would be hard for me to pick between the two personally but from your description for use I would recommend the R1800 from Epson. You can adjust the paper size on both printers so you can do as little as 4x6's all the way up to the larger sizes. Epson sells scrapbookers "paper" in 12x12 so you don't have to deal with cutting, etc. They also have paper intended for printing on both sides. I've run a number of materials through the printers as well so you aren't limited to paper. I'd recommend that whatever you do you plan to keep around your 'older' printer for doing word-docs, etc and save the large format printer for the scrapbooking stuff. You can look for refurbished models to get a lower price or hunt for the discount sites as well. The printers are a big ticket item but in the end the convience is well worth the price. Hope that helps and be sure to check out the articles in Vol 1 issue 4 and Vol 2 issue 1

Scrapbooking / MISC - NOT SCRAPBOOK RELATED / Guy Fawkes Day - Anyone else celebrate it?
|
on: November 05, 2007, 04:14:52 PM
|
|
Tonight I spent a lovely evening around a bonfire, eating a great meal and then topped off the night with Fireworks and sparklers. Anyone else on the boards hold Guy Fawkes 'celebrations' on the 5th of November?
For those that don't know what it is I thought I'd put a little information below. (Copied from holidays.kaboose.com)
In 1605, a person named Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the British Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder. He, and his band of fellow conspirators, were caught after one of the group sent a letter to King James of England warning him to stay away from Parliament. Guy Fawkes was imprisoned and eventually put to death for his trouble, although modern British people remember him as "the only man ever to enter Parliament with honest intentions!"
Nowadays, the British mark Guy Fawkes' Day (or simply Bonfire Night) by building bonfires and letting off fireworks. Traditionally, children made effigies of Fawkes from old clothes stuffed with newspaper, and display their "Guy" in the streets, asking "Penny for the Guy?", and expecting to receive some money. Guys were then thrown on the bonfire at the height of the celebrations.
Big firework displays are organised in public playing fields and open areas, usually with huge bonfires. The bonfires often take weeks to build, and in small communities and villages everyone will bring some wood to add to the pile.
The events of 1605 are also remembered in a nursery rhyme.
"Remember, remember, the 5th of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot. We see no reason why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot."
