I've been working on our family's history using a major on-line program Ancestry.com and it's been wonderful fun. Now I'm ready to print my books and put this project to bed for a few months. Has anyone been through this process and have suggestions for keeping our/my information on my computer and not on line (other then screen printing 100s of pages)? Thanks.

Hi, Cindy:

I'm really not qualified to answer this because I haven't done any genealogical research.  But, since no-one else has commented yet, I'm just going to drop a couple ideas.

One -- its always possible to print to PDF (creating a PDF file) instead of printing on paper.  Lots of programs exist to create PDFs, many for free.  If you don't have one, the one I use is called PrimoPDF.  I downloaded it from PCWorld a few years ago and its always worked flawlessly.

Two -- you can usually always save a web page as a text file, which would save your information but not keep it formatted well.  I'm wondering if the pages might be formatted like a table that you could select/copy/paste into Excel or another spreadsheet program.

Three --  I'm really suprised that Ancestry.com wouldn't have an export function available to paying customers.  Have you double-checked their forums or FAQs just in case you missed it first time around.

Now, maybe someone who really knows about Ancestry.com will answer to set me straight!  But, if not, be sure to let us know what you find out...
